Base layers, person walking outdoors

Base Layers

When the weather outside is frightful, the best way to stay comfortable is to wear a base layer.  You have two primary material choices: Merino wool and synthetics. Merino wool is a brilliant natural fibre that's great at temperature regulation; it provides insulation in the cold and remains breathable in the heat. It’s also naturally odour-resistant, a huge benefit on multi-day trips. Synthetic base layers, usually made from polyester, excel at moving moisture away from your skin and dry very quickly, making them ideal for high-intensity pursuits.

Our collection has a full range of fits for men and women, with long-sleeved tops, short-sleeved tops, and leggings. This allows you to build a complete system for any outing, from a winter mountain expedition to a summer trail run. Getting your base layer right is the first step to a good day outdoors.

A base layer is a thin layer of clothing worn next to the skin. Its primary function is to wick moisture (sweat) away from your body to help regulate your temperature, keeping you dry and comfortable.

Thermals are a type of base layer specifically designed for extra warmth, while base layers in general focus on moisture-wicking and temperature regulation; not all base layers are thermals, but all thermals are base layers.

The main purpose of a base layer is to manage moisture by wicking sweat away from the skin and to help regulate body temperature, keeping you dry, warm, and comfortable in varying conditions.

Merino wool is a natural fibre that is excellent at regulating temperature and is naturally odour-resistant. Synthetic base layers, typically made from polyester, are generally more durable and excel at wicking moisture very quickly, making them great for high-intensity activities.

Yes, base layers come in different fabric weights (often measured in gsm or grams per square meter). Lightweight base layers are for mild conditions or high-intensity exercise, midweight is a versatile option for general hiking, and heavyweight is for very cold conditions with less activity.

Most base layers can be machine washed, but you should always check the care label. Avoid using fabric softeners, as these can clog the fibres and reduce the fabric's wicking ability.

Yes, compression base layers are designed to be much tighter. They aim to support muscles and improve blood flow, which can help with performance and recovery. They are often worn for high-intensity sports like running.

Yes, while many base layers are versatile, some are designed with features for specific sports. For example, a skiing base layer might have a seamless construction to prevent chafing under ski boots, while a running base layer will prioritise being extremely lightweight and breathable.

The layering system consists of three main layers: a base layer for moisture management, a mid-layer (like a fleece) for insulation, and an outer layer (a waterproof jacket) for protection from wind and rain. This system allows you to easily adapt to changing weather conditions by adding or removing layers.
