A belay device is a mechanical tool that creates friction on the climbing rope, allowing the belayer to control rope movement, catch falls, and safely lower a climber. The primary types are tubular devices, assisted-braking devices, and figure 8 devices. Tubular devices are versatile and commonly used for top-roping and lead climbing. Assisted-braking devices offer extra safety by helping to catch falls, while figure 8 devices are mainly used for rappelling and rescue scenarios. 

Assisted-braking devices use a mechanism, often a cam, that automatically applies friction to the rope when a sudden force is detected, such as during a fall. This added braking support helps the belayer arrest a fall more easily, making these devices popular for sport climbing and beginners.
