- Gait [ gait,Gait ]
Running gait refers to the way your foot moves as it hits the ground, and gait types fall into three broad categories
Neutral - The foot strikes the ground, flexing and moving to absorb impact but without excessive rolling. Shoes for neutral runners tend to offer cushioning but don't need to provide as much support as other types, because the foot does this for itself.
Over-Pronation - Pronation is the flattening out of the arch and inward rolling of the foot. Almost all feet do this to an extent to take the impact shock out of landing, but with over-pronation they roll and flatten excessively. This extra movement can cause various stresses and strains on the body so running shoes for over-pronators help to "prop-up" the foot as well as cushioning it.
Under-Pronation or Supination - This is when the foot doesn't flatten and roll enough to absorb shock, which is quite rare. A supinating foot therefore benefits from a shoe with good cushioning and which doesn't restrict pronating movements. Because supination is rare, so are supination-specific shoes, but the cushioning and flex of many neutral shoes often work well for supinators.
Experienced runners will probably know their way around their own feet but, if you're not sure, you can get your gait analysed and find out what type of shoes will work best for you.
- Gore-Tex® [ Gore-Tex,Goretex,GoreTex ]
The benchmark for performance outerwear for decades, Gore-Tex technology refers to the use of a special microporous membrane (ePTFE), bonded to fabrics to make them durably waterproof, but still breathable. - PreCip® [ PreCip,precip ]
PreCip technology offers the lightest, most compressible, technical, waterproof and breathable rainwear. The key to PreCip is its barrier technology: a microporous polyurethane that is impregnated with silicon dioxide particles. These particles create small, numerous, very consistent holes that allow the barrier to pass small water vapour molecules but not the bigger liquid ones. This keeps the rain out while letting your sweat vapour work its way outside, away from your body, to keep you dry from the inside as well as from the outside.
- Tecnopile [ tecnopile,Tecnopile ]
Tecnopile is a fleecey fabric that has been created and finished with extreme care, achieving a soft touch and a smooth, homogenous look.
- Teflon® [ Teflon,teflon ]
A coating that provides durable, long-lasting protection for fabrics against oil and water-based stains, dust and dry soil. Fabrics with Teflon stay looking newer longer, and are easier to care for.
- Thermolite® [ Thermolite,thermolite ]
Provides warmth and comfort without weight, even when wet. It’s the lightweight fabric that provides heavy-duty performance. Plus wearers stay drier because it dries 20% faster than other insulating fabrics, and 50% faster than cotton. Thermolite is a great layering fabric because it’s comfortable and lightweight, allowing more freedom of movement.
- Thinsulate™ [ Thinsulate,thinsulate ]
A thin insulation fabric developed by 3M made of very fine, branching polyester microfibres that trap air molecules to insulate you from the outside. These microfibres are far finer than other fibres, so they trap more air in less space, which naturally makes it a better insulator. It is also breathable, moisture-resistant and machine-washable.
- UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) [ UPF,Ultraviolet Protection Factor ]
A rating for sun protective fabrics and clothing. It gives the proportion of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can pass through the fabric. A UPF 30 fabric, for example, will allow 1/30th of the radiation to pass through, so the higher the UPF rating, the less radiation can pass though. There are three protection categories: UPF 15-24 Good; UPF 25-39 Very Good; UPF 40-50 Excellent.
- Velcro® [ Velcro,velcro ]
A well-known brand of fabric hook-and-loop fastener where tiny hooks on one piece of fabric can bind to tiny loops on another piece of fabric. The two fabrics are then temporarily fastened together but can be pulled or peeled apart.
- Windstopper® [ Windstopper,windstopper ]
An expanded PTFE membrane from W.L. Gore, Windstopper is bonded to the back of a variety of different fabrics according to the requirements of the garment (e.g. lightweight shell fabric, high grade fleece, softshell fabric, etc.) in order to create a completely windproof fabric while still allowing the maximum possible level of breathability.
- YKK® Zip [ YKK Zip,YKK zip,YKK ]
YKK zips are high quality zips used all over the world by many different brands.
- YKK AquaGuard® [ YKK AquaGuard,YKK aquaguard ]
A coil zip coated with a polyurethane layer to make it water-resistant.
- YKK AquaGuard® Vislon® [ YKK AquaGuard Vislon,YKK aquaguard vislon ]
A YKK Vislon zip with a YKK AquaGuard water-resistant coating.
- YKK Conceal® [ YKK Conceal,YKK conceal ]
A zip construction that hides the elements of the zip behind the fabric so that the pocket is invisible when sealed.
- YKK Vislon® [ YKK Vislon,YKK vislon ]
A zip made from injected plastic elements, making it much lighter than a metal alternative.
