We believe that everyone is happier outside, but there’s no escaping the fact that many of our favourite outdoor activities carry inherent risks. That’s why in our stores in England and Wales we’ve chosen to support the work of Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW), whose 49 mountain rescue teams rely on donations from the public.
MREW provide vital services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, rescuing and tending to the lost, stuck, sick and injured in the hills, mountains and moorlands. But they also provide help and support beyond the mountains, searching for missing children and vulnerable adults, aiding kayakers and swimmers in rivers, helping devastated homeowners during urban floods and saving a surprising number of dogs, cows, sheep and other animals from inaccessible places.
Like many charitable organisations, they're facing challenging times, so every penny you give really does make a difference.
£759 of donations could buy a new casualty bag. These robust sleeping bags help keep patients warm whilst allowing the team to continue casualty care during an evacuation.
£800 of donations could fund the service of a stretcher. Stretchers are vital for supporting and protecting patients during their evacuation from hills and mountains, when being winched into a helicopter or when being lowered off a cliff.
£1000 of donations could cover a vacuum mattress which is used to immobilise, support and protect patients with spinal injuries when being transported to safety.

Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR) is a community of 25 member Mountain Rescue Teams (MRTs) made up of 850 highly trained volunteers who respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They carry out a specialist search and rescue service in the mountains and remote communities in Scotland to keep people safe and help people, if and when they get into difficulty. These dedicated people give up their time, their beds, abandon their work, and are often called away from their families to assist total strangers in their hour of need.
MRTs’ purpose is Volunteering to Save Lives, Any Hour, Any Day, Any Weather. SMR exists to ensure that the individual teams have the best possible environment to be able to safely and efficiently conduct rescues.
The remote nature of the Scottish mountains, the terrain and the prevailing weather mean that many search and rescue operations in Scotland simply cannot be carried out without large numbers of volunteers who are able to go out on foot and who can be mobilised quickly. It often is simply not possible to search for people by helicopter in Scotland, because low clouds often prevent the helicopters from flying.
As ever-increasing numbers of people enjoy Scotland’s mountains and wild places, SMR are seeing increasing numbers of call-outs. In order to be ready to respond and ensure that they continue to provide the best possible rescue service, SMR need our support to continue to grow. Three in five rescues are funded by donations from the public.
