Top Three Countries For Alternative Living
Nestled in the heart of Europe, Slovenia reigns supreme as the ultimate alternative living destination. Switzerland takes the third spot as a top alternative living spot, demonstrating a deep connection with nature through its 25.91% rural population. Switzerland is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts, offering 449,403 trails that wind through its stunning landscapes. The country is a leader in environmental conservation, with 13 UNESCO-protected sites and a forested area covering 12,725.5 sq-km. The Swiss commitment to a sustainable lifestyle is further highlighted by its 3,081 vegan and vegetarian restaurants. Additionally, Switzerland hosts 13 outdoor festivals, showcasing its vibrant culture and love for the outdoors.

We also looked at where in Europe has the most amount of hiking trails available per sq km, highlighting destinations where the density of hiking trails is exceptionally high, offering extensive options for outdoor enthusiasts in comparatively small areas.
First on our list is Andorra (pictured above), a nation that, despite its compact size of 468sq km, is home to an astonishing 93,705 hiking trails. This incredible density of trails in such a small area makes Andorra a prime destination for hikers looking for variety and beauty within a condensed space. The country’s diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to serene valleys, ensures that each trail offers a unique hiking experience.
In second place is Monaco, proving that even the smallest countries can pack a punch when it comes to outdoor adventures. With 88 hiking trails within just 2sq km, Monaco offers a unique blend of urban and natural exploration. These trails allow visitors to experience the lush landscapes and panoramic views of the Mediterranean, all within steps of the city’s luxurious ambience.
Malta ranks third, with its 315sq-km area featuring 19,315 hiking trails. This island nation uses its space efficiently to provide hikers with a range of routes that span its historical sites, coastal paths, and countryside. Malta’s trails offer a glimpse into the island's rich culture and stunning natural beauty, making it a favoured destination for those who love to explore on foot.
