Introducing The Juniper Trust

The Juniper Trust was founded in 1994 by a group of volunteers, inspired by writer and teacher Angela Locke. KE Adventure founder Glenn Rowley, now a trustee of the charity, was invited to attend a Juniper Trust meeting in those early days and has since been the driving force behind KE Adventure’s support for the charity, inspiring many KE Adventure clients and ground agents to also help where they can. Since then, the Juniper Trust has expanded to support projects across the world, but its vision remains the same: to work in a low-impact, sustainable way, supporting the poorest communities, particularly children, listening to community needs in the developing world and working with them in equal partnership.

Cotswold Outdoor have been working with the Juniper Trust for the last ten years, supporting several of their projects in areas frequently visited by KE Adventure clients. 

In India, Cotswold Outdoor have supported historic projects such as the rebuilding of Congress School in Darjeeling; a major overhaul of the facilities at the Lingshed Hostel in Leh; the installation of solar panels in a remote village in Spiti; and support for the Ladakh Flood appeal in 2010. The Juniper Trust has provided support to the Northern Areas of Pakistan over the years, including a fresh water supply and teacher training in Hushe and, more recently, the building of a new school in the remote village of Asumbar. In Kenya, the Trust has helped Island School in Ol Maisor, a small village beneath Mount Kenya, and Gitare Primary School in Tanzania has benefited from a new library. In Peru's Huayhuash and Cordillera Blanca regions, the Juniper Trust has supported the installation of 4000 solar lights. 

In Nepal, the Juniper Trust’s flagship success has undoubtedly been the rebuilding of fourteen schools since the earthquake in April 2015, with six more planned to be completed by 2020. KE Adventure and Cotswold Outdoor have helped to raise over £100,000 for this project and continue to support the school rebuilding effort. Recent projects in Nepal also include the renovation of the Adarsha Bal Vikas Kendra (ABVK) School for physically and mentally handicapped children, the rebuilding of the Sanjiwani Hostel for blind children, and the PRAN Centre for Rehabilitation.

In 2019, Cotswold Outdoor will continue to support the Juniper Trust to help raise £50,000 to rebuild three more schools in Nepal - two community primary schools in the villages of Rawa Dolu and Vidhyadatri Khaptel, and a smaller Kindergarten at Bamti. These remote villages are close to Bhandar, approximately 100km from Kathmandu, and are still using temporary shelters for schools almost four years after the earthquake. The Juniper Trust hopes to reach its target of rebuilding 20 schools damaged by the 2015 earthquake - by 2020.

The Juniper Trust have no overheads, so 100% of all donations go directly into the projects of the donor’s choosing. Funds come from the generous support of individuals, organisations and schools who have formed a close connection with communities they have visited through KE Adventure trips, or through hearing about the Juniper Trust's work.
